Mount Meru

Mount Meru is a centerpiece of the Arusha National Park also the second largest mountain in Tanzania. Mount Meru has an active Volcano of 4566 metres about 70 km west of Mount Kilimanjaro.  It is an excellent stand-alone trip used as a warm up climb in preparation to Mount Kilimanjaro.

The park and its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding savanna and support a forest that hosts diverse wildlife, include diverse bird species and also monkey and leopards.

The ascent is quite steep in places and the route to the summit passes over a number of streams, moving through grassland, tropical forest, alpine meadow, moorland and desert uplands to snow and ice.  The summit is reach by a narrow, barren ridge, which provide stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several hundred feet below in the crater.
